@anaconda9000
Clipboards are an excellent suggestion. Gathering everything up into one pile makes a lot of sense.

@Rook
I'm always worried that I take too hard a line when it comes to knowing your character (#2). But if you don't understand your most basic actions (like your at-will powers) then you should do more prep before sitting down. As I said in the article, I always give newbies a lot of latitude, but at last weekend's Con I was at a game levels 7-10 and one of the players had no idea what they were doing. It was so frustrating. How do you reach level 7 and not know your character?!?

@ladybam
I intentionally stayed away from the hygiene issue in this article. I want to believe that most people have enough common sense to know they should bathe and brush their teeth without putting it on a list like this. But regrettably I had a few run-ins with players this past weekend who certainly could have used a heads up (and a bar of soap). I think this is a case where we need to lead by example.

These tips are very helpful to new and old players alike. I know I'm bad for space hogging (sometime) and being respectful help makes the play nicer. I learned to cut down by using a netbook. I have everything on there. I do my number on a excel spreadsheet and my powers are used in a pdf version of my character sheet. With my dice and its all I really need. I cut down my space in half.
Also, keep in mind personal hygiene. It is a very important part of convention play. Having bad body or mouth odour make it harder at your table for other player to focus when all they are doing is thinking… WHO SMELLS. Mints, gum and body spray take up a small room in your kit. It should be a must.
In the end treat other how you want to be treated and use common scenes for all.
On another note, you are very welcome. It was my please to take my time out to help make Spellstorm 2010 fun and successful. I'm just a small part in the larger picture. Without the DMs and others who took there time out it would of never worked. Also to Dominic Amann and Stephanie Amann, without you my world would be 4e less. I could say so much but in the end it comes down to .... Thank you, I owe you a lot.

Blast! You beat me to it. I use clipboards (plural) as well. One for character sheets and one for my scratch sheet and my at-will cards. The others are on the table so I can flip them over when used.

Great post and tips. We can always use a basics refresher, newbie and veterans alike. I can't stress enough the importance of #2 and #5, in particular. And I like the point about controllers in #6. Good stuff.

I find having a clipboard to be very handy when table real estate is precious. Scrap paper, my notes, character sheet, a pencil, even power cards are all ready to use in one convenient location.
