I hope you enjoyed this month’s carnival and the submissions that it brought. Be sure to read each submission and surprise your table with a character inspired from real life.
Below are links and an excerpts for each of the submissions. Enjoy!
- Lungfishopolis provided Edison and Tesla as Villans – Edison and Tesla, who maintained a rivalry in real life are re-imagined as villains in this inspired post. In the words of the Greg “…their “The War of the Currents” is well known, deciding whether alternating current or direct current would prevail as the dominant means of electrical delivery. Tesla was a brilliant scientific mind with poor business sense, and Edison was a brute force inventor with many unscrupulous practices. Whereas their main scientific forays in reality were electricity, in a fantasy setting they can be made into magical innovators.”
- Platinum Warlock provided Sam Clemens – A great take on Mark Twain, ready to insert into your campaign.
- Dave at Monkeymartin provided his take on Ilya Ivanov – The great thing about hosting the Blog Carnival is it sometimes introduces you to writers you weren’t aware of initially. That is the case with this submission, as I now have a new blog on my reader. It also introduced me to a character I didn’t know very much about. “Ilya Ivanov was a Russian biologist who worked from the turn of the century until the early 1930’s. He pioneered revolutionary artificial insemination techniques and used the technology to create a wide variety of hybrids, including zebra-donkey, antelope-cow, and rabbit-guinea pig mixes (hello owlbear!).”
- Berin Kinsman provided some insightful advice about Letting Go Of Inspired Characters – If there was one submission to this month’s carnival that I could say this is what I wrote, it would be the submission from Berin Kinsman. In his post Berin warns against the dangers of using a character that too closely resembles their real life muse.
- Byswarm provided John Wayne as Marion Morrison – A great take on the legend of John Wayne, introducing him to the fantasy genre as beast wrangler. I imagine some serious attitude is required to take on a job like that. Good on you Duke.
- Dungeons ‘n Dragons provided Lord Yard – I will confess my ignorance and not pretend to know who this is character is themed after. Instead it seems that Rakshasa has come to Earth and is living among us. The bonus, he brought an adventure with him.
- Middle Aged DM provided Charles Themasheen – This is the post I wish I had thought of. Charlie Sheen as a villain or fallen hero. Either way it’s pure humour and well done. I got a chuckle out of Themasheen’s powers.
- Captain DM provided Edgar Allen Poe the Necromancer – Edgar Allen Poe is one of my favourite poets, so seeing him represented in the Carnival this month was a great treat. His story makes for great background info for an NPC that starts as a trusted friend and slowly succumbs to madness. Good stuff all a round.
- The Dungeon’s Master team provided Tiger Woods – I would be remiss if I didn’t mention our own submission. Ameron presents Tiger Woods and the Quest for the Green Jacket.
A sincere thanks to everyone who participated in this months carnival. We hope that your campaigns are all richer with new characters for your players to interact with.

Thanks for the kind words!
It was Rudyard Kipling :D
Oh darn dungeonsNdragons, I had hoped you'd see who knew. I really enjoyed your submission and although I had to think for a moment it hit me shortly into reading your post. An excellent application of Kipling but I fear most players would react the same as Dungeon's Master... who's that guy? (No offense to Dungeon's Master, that's a tricky one and I love what you guys do!)
Thanks! I had a blast with the whole carnival and I'm excited to see what comes next.
I'm glad my submission is alright. Personally, I think Charles Themasheen is pretty awesome. I'll hopefully end up throwing a few of these in my game soon. They're all great and I can't wait for the next challenge!
Aw dang you're right I should have held off!
Was originally going to just stick with just Lord Yard, but but I chickened out at the last minute and added Keeplin to make it a little easier :)
