Quarterly Review: Q1 2013

At the end of every month since we started Dungeon’s Master we provided a Month in Review recap of everything we ran that month. When we were running new articles every day the Month in Review was need to ensure that our loyal readers didn’t miss any of the great stuff we were providing. However, over the past year we’ve published fewer articles each month and the Month in Review posts were a bit sparse. When the blog reached its fourth birthday we decided to make a change and stop running the Month in Review. Instead we decided from that point forward we’d do a Quarterly Review. Our first quarter of 2013 ran from February 1 – April 30.

Today we collect all the articles we ran over the past three months, group them by category, and share the links with you. It’s exactly like the way we used to do the Month in Review.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who visited Dungeon’s Master over the past three months. It’s your loyalty and your comments that keep us going. We welcome your feedback and encourage you to share your thoughts in the comments, by email, or on Twitter.

Month in Review: December 2012

December was a month for reflection here at Dungeon’s Master. The only brand new articles we posted were the weekly D&D Encounters reports and the season 11 report card. However, for the last two weeks of the month we ran our 2012 greatest hits.

Even though I haven’t been playing as much D&D over the past couple of months as I used to, going through our archives and revisiting some of the articles we published this past year really served as a good way to get recharged. I remembered a lot of the great games that inspired me to write so many of the articles. Reading the comments our readers left reminded me how much we’ve contributed to the gaming community and hopefully how much we’ve helped along the way.

I’d like to thank everyone who visited Dungeon’s Master in December. For newer readers I hope that you enjoyed a look back at our greatest hits from 2012. I think they provided a good cross-section of the kinds of things we strive to accomplish with this blog. We welcome your comments and feedback as well as any ideas you might have for future articles.

Month in Review: November 2012

We may not have published a lot of articles in November but the ones we did were solid. If you missed any of them this is your chance to get caught up. Yes we’ve focused a lot of attention on D&D Encounters but that’s not all we’ve got.

In November we ran an article on magic items with charges, something that we don’t have in 4e D&D but we certainly could, we explored the idea of using D&D Bingo cards to add more to your game by encouraging the players and their characters to do things they might not otherwise deem necessary, and we looked at the upcoming season of Lair Assault (which certainly looks like another home run from the Wizards creative team). Check out all of our highlights from November below.

As always I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of our readers. By coming back regularly and leaving your comments it helps us get a better idea of what you want and we do our best to try to provide it. If there’s something you’d like to see on Dungeon’s Master or there’s a topic you like us to cover, let us know in the comments or contact us by email or Twitter.

Month in Review: October 2012

Two articles we wrote in October made a big splash with our readers: one about treasure maps and one about a player who did something very unexpected. Thanks in large part to Twitter and Reddit these two articles generated a lot of traffic and a lot of discussion. Although these were our most read articles last month they weren’t the only things we talked about in October. Undead also featured prominently at Dungeon’s Master as we posted three new articles on the subject.

If you missed any of the great articles we ran in October than this is your chance to get caught up and join in the discussion. Below we provide links to everything we ran last month.

We’d like to thank everyone who visited our site in October. We’d also like to thank everyone who took the time to leave us a comment. Your feedback is the best gauge we’ve got to determining if we’re on the right track and if our articles are helping you and your D&D games.

If there’s something you’d like to see on Dungeon’s Master or there’s a topic you like us to cover, let us know in the comments or contact us by email or Twitter.

Month in Review: September 2012

In September I officially became a professional gamer as I had two articles published in Dungeon Magazine. At the same time my home gaming group decided that we needed a short break from D&D so we’ve been trying out other board games and RPGs. I’ve realized that by taking a step back it’s provided new perspective which is serving as a great source of inspiration.

In September we borrowed from Doctor Who and Dresden Files to come up with articles on New Initiative and Collaborative Dungeon Design. Who knows what October will bring?

Last month we continued to focus heavily on D&D public play with our preview of the new Lair Assault: Kill the Wizard, and weekly coverage of D&D Encounters: Council of Spiders. Even if you’re not actively playing D&D Encounters you should check out our actual-play podcast and our weekly show “Recounting Encounters” in which we dissect each week’s session.

We’d like to thank everyone who visited Dungeon’s Master in September. Please leave us your comments and let us know what you think. We welcome your feedback, opinions and questions. I also encourage you to follow me on Twitter (@ameron_dm).

Month in Review: July 2012

It was another strong month here at Dungeon’s Master. We covered a wide variety of topics including sex and drugs in D&D, Wheaton’s Law, social media, essential RPG books and of course D&D Encounters. If you missed any of our articles from July than now is the time to get caught up. We’ve provided links below to everything we posted in July along with a brief description of each.

Our readership increased in July thanks to a couple of controversial articles and some amazing Star Wars pre-gens for D&D Encounters. We want to thank everyone who visited our site last month, especially those of you who comment regularly. Your feedback lets us know if we’re doing a good job and the overwhelming majority of comments are usually quite positive. Please keep reading and please keep providing your comments and questions.

Month in Review: April 2012

April was a skinny month when it came to content at Dungeon’s Master. I’ll admit that I didn’t come anywhere close to getting articles out every day. However, I’d like to think that what we lacked in quantity we made up for in quality. The number of visitors to Dungeon’s Master dipped a little bit (which I suppose it to be expected when you go from 20+ articles a month to only 12) but they are still holding strong.

When our iron man publishing streak finally came to an end in March I was really concerned that we’d lose readers. But after seeing the numbers remain more or less consistent I realized that perhaps publishing five articles a week was too much. When you didn’t have to read five articles a week you were more likely to actually read the three we did put out. So moving forward I think well try to hit three or four articles a week and we hope that you’ll continue to visit and comment on everything we do publish.

That being said if you did miss anything in April, this is your chance to get caught up. We’d like to thank all of our readers, new and returning for your loyalty and support.

Month in Review: March 2012

We might not have published articles every day in March, but the days we hit were chalked full of great 4e D&D content. If you missed any of our articles over the past month then this is your chance to get caught up.

It finally happened; our Iron Man streak ended in March. For the first time since we launched Dungeon’s Master we took a few days off during the March break (see March Broken). However, even with a few days off our numbers continued to climb.

Strong articles that covered topics like how to keep players involved in the game when dice go cold, including a blind player at your table, methods for dividing treasure, a humorous look at what your weapons says about your character, and new pre-gens for D&D Encounters all contributed to another great month at Dungeon’s Master.

We want to thank everyone who visited our site over the past month and encourage you to continue reading. We invite you to comment on articles that you like, hate, or have questions about. And if there’s something you want us to write about send us an email or comment below and we’ll see what we can do to accommodate.

Month in Review: January 2012

The announcement from Wizards of the Coast confirming that they are indeed working on the next iteration of D&D was the biggest news in gaming this month. A lot of people began speculating on what’s to come, but for now Wizards has not released a lot of details. Our existing relationship with Wizards of the Coast and an NDA restricts us from delving into this topic in too much detail, but what we can share on the subject we did. While the majority of the blogosphere wondered about what’s to come we continued providing great materials every day for those of us playing 4e now.

January ended up being a month for players with most of our articles aimed at them and not the DM (for a change). We continued to provide weekly recaps of D&D Encounters: Beyond the Crystal Cave and launched our Pre-Generated Character Library. We looked at the old 3d6 method for creating ability scores, fixing the maximum number of hit points characters have, and the importance of contacts.

If you missed any of our articles from January this is your perfect opportunity to get caught up. We encourage you to read any of the articles you might have missed or to revisit some of your favourites.

We want to thank everyone who visited Dungeon’s Master throughout the month of January, with a special shout out to everyone who left us comments. We measure our success largely based on what you, the readers, have to say. We welcome your feedback and encourage continued debate and discussion on every article we write.

Month in Review: October 2011

Our October articles covered a wide variety of topics for players and DMs. Chances are that throughout October there was at least one or two articles that appealed to you no matter what kind of gamer you are, no matter if you’re a DM or player.

We looked at magic items beginning with magic item identification, adventure hooks where the loot is part of the plot, and then whether or not monsters should use the magic items against the PCs. There was emphasis on cooperative play including an in-depth look at assisting, the benefits of playing someone else’s character and encounter design tips that reward cooperative play.

Throw in a deep discussion on death, a look at the silly aspects of fantasy gaming, D&D Encounters field reports and, of course, an article about zombies and you’ve got a pretty good idea of the eclectic mix of topics we covered in October. If you missed any of the great articles from October then this is your change to get caught up.

We’d like to thank all of our readers for continuing to visit Dungeon’s Master every day. We value your opinion and encourage you to keep providing your feedback in the comments section. We want to hear what you have to say and enjoy the discussion that your comments generate. Even if you disagree with our stance on an issue or topic, the discussion gets people talking which is always our goal.
